Christmas

I slept until 11.

My mom bought me and my sister books by Aleister Crowley. For those that don't know, he was a pioneering thinker and writer in the world of cults and "magick". He was also a racist, sexist drug addict and some believe he worshiped satan.

My mother did not know this.

Neither of the books could of revealed this; one was a fictional story about the battle between good and evil, and the other was a diary of his struggles with drugs. They seemed pretty innocent, and they were. but my father, being the god-fearing weirdo that he is, launched into a blubbering tirade denouncing Mr. Crowley (this may be an exaggeration of my dad's reaction, but he certainly wasn't happy). During this rant he talked a lot about "living in a culture of life" and called Crowley a "demon". My mom just laughed and apologized because she honestly had no idea about this guy's background.

In the end, my mom thought the books (even though they weren't about anything that bad) would bring "darkness" into our house, so she exchanged them for new ones. I would've protested, because censorship is wrong, but I really didn't have much of an interest in the books anyway.

In my opinion, both Aleister and my parents took too many drugs in their youth. The whole thing was pretty awkward and amusing.

I didn't get as much money as I expected, nor did I really get anything I wanted or asked for. But I'm still happy. I mean, I'm getting a trip to Florida. Sometimes you don't ask for things but you are perfectly happy with receiving them, y'know? My favorite gift was two books written by Anthony Bordain, and a DVD of his show No Reservations. Now I just need his cookbooks and I'll have the complete collection :-)

Other highlights: chocolate pie, Disney Christmas Parade, Chambord, my grandfather giving everyone twenty ONE dollars for no particular reason, gramma thinking that the toaster oven was a microwave, going out at 12:30 AM on christmas morning to get a popcorn tin, etc.

It was kind of merry. Hope everyone's was too.

man oh man

I haven't left the house in about three days because of the snow.

I mean, I could've shoveled my car out and driven verrry slowly down the driveway and on the roads. But um, I didn't. Instead I stayed home and made gingerbread cookies and drank lots of cocoa. It was very delicious and very HORRIBLE because I feel sick even though I'm not.

Also, I think my house gives me insomnia because I sleep easily at school but not here at home. But even though I'll probably go to bed ridiculously late again, I'm getting up early tomorrow and DOING SOMETHING. Anything, really. I need to go christmas shopping, so maybe I'll do that. Day before christmas eve, that's how I do it.
I actually have a metric shitload of stuff to do before I leave for South Carolina/Florida. Which, by the way, I am extremely excited about. Because I love being away from home. And I love seeing Krista and Lily. And I love warm weather. Really, I love everything about going South for a whole 2 weeks.

In any event...I think I need to make a list...of things to do.

In conclusion, here is one of the cutest things I've ever seen. Sure to put a smile on your face.

<lj-embed id="17" />

Haha Ah!

yay for birthdays

I had an amazing 21st birthday. Really, pretty much everything I wanted it to be.

Julie got me a Jon Howe for my birthday. Lovely to see him. He seemed a little sad though...or at least it seemed like it to me. He's back in Illinois now...it was a very brief visit.

MGM Grand really was grand. Although I wish I had gambled a little and I wish that every guy in the club didn't look EXACTLY the same (Guidos EVERYWHERE. Ew.). And I'm in love with Amaretto Sours and Sex on the Beach and dancing and comfy hotel beds and sexy dresses and finally being free.

I'm glad Obama won.

But it bothers me that people are still fighting to ban abortion and gay marriage.

It bothers me that people think Obama is a socialist.

It bothers me that ignorant people are comparing him to Hitler and Stalin.

It bothers me that people don't realize that socialist medicine and universal healthcare are the same thing.

It bothers me that closet racists are showing their true colors in their remarks about our new president.

It bothers me that while some people want to move forward, so many others are taking a step back.

And it bothers me to know that even though Obama says he will fight for change, he most likely will not bring the drastic change that our government, economy, and society needs.

But still, I'll drink to the fact that the embarrassment we've been calling our president for 8 years is finally getting the boot.

So I can make money rather than spending it to go there. I might just do that. Life's an adventure.

...and a pickle

I went to see Choke tonight. It wasn't bad. Not amazing though. It wasn't "dark" enough...if that makes any sense. I do have a thing for Sam Rockwell, which I guess is kind of odd?
After that me and Em went on a search because it's Sunday and it was 10 pm by that point and she really wanted baked ziti. We ended up at pricechopper and she settled on Lasagna (eh...pretty close), along with beef empanadas, 4 pieces of cheesecake and a pickle.

I dunno I dunno I dunno.

When I went to get gas a groups of guys walked over from the motel across the street. To buy cigarettes or something. They were all dressed up. One of them was wearing a yellow tie with horses and horse shoes on it. He asked me if I thought his tie was stupid because everyone was giving him a hard time about it. I said "No I guess not but it's kind of random. I mean, why are there horses on it?" He said he didn't know. I imagine he was dressed up to go to some important event. Like a banquet or something.

I should have told him his tie looked great.

I thought for a long time about him being self conscious about his tie. And maybe if I had told him it looked good then he would have had a little more confidence. I imagined him standing at a banquet, ready to accept some certificate or award and standing there sweating, wondering if everyone in the room was silently judging his weird tie. It made me feel like a jerk.

He should have been able to wear his inexplicable horse tie with pride.

But, maybe he changed his tie. Or maybe he doesn't give a shit what everyone else thinks. That's the way to be.

Hmmm. So at iparty we're encouraged to wear costumes and accessories during Halloween. Full costumes if we want to. I am SO PUMPED to wear vampire teeth to work. And assorted wigs.

I overheard a really great idea the other day. I'm not gonna take credit for it, but I've made some embellishments. It looks like this:

1. Acquire moonbounce.
2. Wait until night time.
3. Fill moonbounce with glow sticks.
4. Get really drunk/high.
6. Turn on appropriate music.
5.
Leonard Bernstein!!!

Tomorrow...the Large Hadron Collider is scheduled to be turned on, and there is a 1 in 50 million chance that something terrible is going to happen. Such as the world ending. If it does:

Peanut Butter will be the last thing I ever ate.
Speak will be the last book I ever read.
Lisa Lampanelli will be the last person that ever made me laugh.
Last Place Victory will be the last band I ever saw play a show.

Maybe I should be doing something rash? Maybe I should be professing my love for someone, having a party, hugging my mother, taking lots of drugs? Maybe if it was a 1 in 50,000 chance.

The world is not going to fucking end. And, for me, this would be a bad time for it to do so. I mean I haven't really lived, have I? Besides, there is a higher chance that the Collider will find "extra dimensions", which sounds like a party to me. Pretty fucking awesome.

So flip the switch, fellas. Smash those particles together. Have a ball. Find whatever it is you're looking for. I'm going to. I should. I need to.

Okay that one HAD to be a sign. That's three things in a fuckin row. Am I crazy?

Ok yeah anyway. I LOVE my room and my apartment. LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE. I can lay on my bed and see the stars (well...some stars, I am in Hartford and the artificial light kind of blocks most of them out.). Today is the first day of classes of my Senior year (ah!). I only have communication theory or research or some boring shit. I dunno.

I just wanted to profess my love for my room. And say that I feel really sad without Melissa as my roomate because I had gotten so comfortable with that :-(

I was awakened this morning by a faint clicking sound coming from my desk. It was the sound of a tiny little engine trying it's darndest to start up and failing. Click, sigh, click, sigh, click, sigh.

It was, my friends, the death rattle of my ipod.

Now that brings the death toll of this household's electronic devices to: one laptop, one cell phone, two digital cameras, one PC, one television, and now, an ipod. So unless I find a way to scan the hard drive on my old laptop, all of the music I have amassed over the last few years is lost forever, along with about 5 years of photographs and word documents. ALL OF MY MUSIC. ALL OF IT. I'm trying to keep calm. I was waiting until I had enough money for an external hard drive, but I guess I waited too long.

Anyway. I finally got film for the Lomo Emily got me all the way back at Christmas. I had to order it from California because no place around here sells it. So that's nice. I'm glad I can use it now.

I wish it would stop raining every fucking day.

<lj-embed id="6" />

Some things about tonights Gogol Bordello concert:

1. Gogol Bordello is the best, most fun live band on the planet, hands down (well, maybe tied with Say Anything). You can't not have a good time at one of their shows, even if you've never listened to them before.

2. Gogol has an incredibly diverse fan base. Toad's was filled with people all the way to the exit door. There were punk rockers, hipsters, nerdy guys, a bunch of hippies (many dreadlocks everywhere), a surprising amount of people that looked close to my parents age, and lots of others. I'm so used to going to shows that are mostly girls (i.e. All Time Low) or mostly guys (i.e. Thursday). It was refreshing to see so many different people brought together by music that's just plain great, no matter what "niche" you're part of.

3. There is ALWAYS that one fucking weird guy at concerts. He's always alone, always intoxicated on some substance (or several), always smelly/sweaty, and always acts a fool and gets himself thrown out. No exception here.

4. One thing I've noticed about girlfriends of band members: they never seem like they're having any fun at shows. They just stand back stage texting on their sidekick or something. As if they're fucking bored or like...above taking any interest in what's going on. But Eugene Hutz's girlfriend was there tonight, and she was dancing and totally enthralled during the whole show, which is the way it should be. So good for her.

5. Elijah Wood was at the show. He walked right by me and Em. Fucking Frodo Baggins. Out of nowhere. It was pretty awesome. He's extremely petite.

I fucking HATE making decisions.

So I got offered two jobs. One at iparty, and one at Linens and Things. Now, Linens and Things is offering me about 10 dollars more per week than iparty and is also slightly closer to my school. However, iparty seems like more fun, and there are more people my age that work there. Plus, Emily just got a job there too so I'd be working with her, which would be nice. Today was her first day and she really likes it and says everyone is really cool. My dilemma is...is 10 dollars worth working at the more boring job? I don't know what to do!! I think I'm leaning towards iparty. I mean gosh...this isn't like, life changing. It's just a choice between two temporary, slightly above minimum wage throw away jobs. But I hate regrets.

Anyways, I've decided that I'm not allowing myself to eat at a Chinese restaurant until I lose 15 pounds. Chinese is my downfall. Every time I eat it I gorge myself and gain like 5 pounds. But I love it and I've been craving it sooooo much. At other restaurants I'm good at ordering healthy stuff and not ruining my hard work at the gym. But when it comes to Chinese, if I get wet, I have to go swimming...so to speak. So I guess it's motivation. I've been doing really well at the gym and dieting and such and I've lost a couple of inches off my waist. Although, my trainer broke her wrist today so my routine might have to change a bit. Poor girl....she was supposed to be doing a triathlon soon.

Anybody want to guess what the Montauk Monster is? Fascinating stuff, really. I'm thinking it's a raccoon. A really hideous raccoon.

New Hampshire

1. My car broke down. Long story short, it's still in New Hampshire. Also, I got to drive a sick rental car with satellite radio.

2. We went to Lost River Gorge and Boulder Caves. Good times. I did not squeeeeeeze through the lemon squeezer.

3. We also went to the Kanc and were almost swept away in the rapids. Bruised knees for all.

4. I saw Gordy. He was my swimming teacher when I was like, ten years old. He stopped working at camp then all of a sudden he's back. He used to say "Julia, what would you do without me?" all the time because I would always forget things on the beach and he would have to remind me. I had a huge crush on him and I swear he hasn't aged a day. It's pretty weird/impressive.

5. I also saw Allie. It's been a whole FIVE YEARS since we were CIT's together. Some of our campers are counselors now. It's funny how I feel so young in the real world, then I go to camp and I feel so old. It's uncomfortable.

6. We went to a Pow Wow and some weird native american lady made us try her "tree teas". They're supposed to cure all kinds of ailments. We spent the rest of the day worrying that we'd been poisoned. I also bought some cool beaded earrings and the old man that sold them to me started hitting on me and Em. Then he started speaking italian. Overall...one of the most bizarre experiences of my life.

7. Fireworks!

And it's weird because Al is only 18 months younger than me yet we're still so far apart in school. He won best dressed AND most likely to succeed in his yearbook. And he's going to Boston College to be a lawyer. He's like the fucking golden child. Anyways, the party was nice. Some drunk friend of my Aunt's (she was a little intense) introduced me to this guy whose daughter is the Assistant Editor at a magazine in Washington DC, so he gave me her e-mail. Yay for networking! It's really important to have lots of connections in journalism.

Drunken friend of my Aunt: OH YOU LIKE JOURNALISM?! YOU'LL HAVE TO TALK TO MY FRIEND, HIS DAUGHTER RUNS SOME MAGAZINE IN DC!

Me: Yeah, that would be great.

Drunky: NO SERIOUSLY! CONNECTIONS!!!

Me: Yeah, I 'll definitely talk to him.

Wino: REALLY! I'LL INTRODUCE YOU!

Me: mmhmm

Crunk: REALLY! YOU HAVE TO!

Me: Yes, I believe you.

Drunky McDrunkenstein: CONNECTIONS!! DGHRHEVVLALFEWGBLAAAAHHH!!!

So yeah. That's how my weekend went.
